During May 30th and 31st, 2016, the first International Workshop on Regional Oceanic Numerical Modeling and Observations was held in Nanjing. More than 200 scholars, and students participated in the workshop. They came from China, US, France, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Japan, Korea, etc. Prof. CHAI Fei, the Director of SOED, served as a co-chair of the workshop.

The workshop was hosted by the School of Marine Science, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, and co-hosted by SOED. There were four sessions: Regional Oceanic Numerical Modeling & Mesoscale Air-Sea Interaction, Oceanic Instability and Mixing, Coastal and Regional Observation Development, Coastal and Regional Oceanic Data Assimilation and Forecast.

During the workshop, Prof. CHAI gave a invited talk on Modeling Carbon Cycle and Ecosystems in the Pacific Ocean. Dr. YANG Jinsong gave a invited talk on Satellite Remote Sensing of Typhoons and Storm Surges.

The workshop strengthened academic exchanges between marine scientists in China and those from abroad. They explored ways to carry out international cooperation. The workshop also enhanced SOED’s exposure in the fields of regional oceanic numerical modeling and observation.
