From May 6th to 31st, the SOED State Council held the second course of the 2019 Spring Starfish Open Course Series - Introduction to Remote Sensing Digital Image Processing. This open class on starfish is taught by LIU Jianguo, a professor at Imperial College London.
Liu Jianguo is a professor of remote sensing in the Department of Earth Sciences at Imperial College London and an internationally renowned expert in remote sensing image processing and application. He has been engaged in remote sensing image processing and earth science application research for many years. He has published more than 130 academic papers in international journals and major academic conferences, and has published two academic monographs by the world-famous Wiley-Blackwell Press. Many simple, novel and effective image processing methods designed and developed by Professor Liu Jianguo have been adopted by mainstream international image processing software and are widely used in the remote sensing community. For example, the spectral information fidelity Pan-sharpen image sharpening method he designed has been adopted by Airbus-ASTRIUM and ESA as a standard algorithm for producing this type of remote sensing image products, and the article has been cited thousands of times.
During the lecture, Professor Liu explained in detail the knowledge points of enhancing and optimizing the display of multispectral information in remote sensing images, including: basic principles of remote sensing, image contrast expansion (point operation), algebraic operation special information extraction, chromaticity coordinate transformation data fusion and image filter. Later in the course, he introduced courses related to image analysis, including: main quantity analysis and classification of multispectral images, sub-pixel image analysis technology and its expanding applications, precise image matching and geometric correction, principles and applications of radar and radar coherence technology.
This course attracted dozens of scientific researchers from scientific research units and universities such as Zhejiang University, National University of Defense Technology, Zhejiang Water Conservancy and Hydropower, and the Second Institute of Oceanography. Professor Liu’s lectures were humorous, informative, and actively interacted with the students. He combined theory with practice and demonstrated the image processing process of many software to the students while teaching. The students generally reported that they benefited a lot and hoped to participate in similar courses in the future.
