Duration: 2003-2018
Source: The monthly remote sensing reflectance data retrieved by Aqua/MODIS were from NASA.
Version: 2018
Dataset Name: SIO_AQUA_MODIS_EAMS

Product Name: SIO_AQUA_MODIS_yyyy-MM-dd-HH-mm-ss_L3B_EAMS_1KM_SSS_HE2018
Processing:
The quasi-analytical algorithm of ocean inherent optical properties using two reference wavelengths was adopted to retrieved the total absorption coefficient a(λ) and total backscattering coefficient bb(λ), which was developed by Pan et al. (2007). The algorithm was based on the stable and strong spectral relationship of the absorption coefficient (excluding the contribution of pure water) and particle backscattering coefficient at 510nm and 555nm. The absorption coefficient and particle backscattering coefficient at 510nm and 555nm is calculated firstly through algebraic equations, and then based on the spectral model of particle backscattering coefficient, the a(λ) and bb(λ) at the other wavelength are extrapolated. Then, the quasi-analytic remote sensing algorithm of CDOM developed by Bai et al. (2008) was adopted to derive the absorption coefficients of the CDOM and organic detritus separately from the total absorption coefficient.
Based on the retrieved absorption coefficients of the CDOM, the salinity was estimated by the empirical model in the East China Sea as SSS=35.595-14.151*aCDOM(355nm) (Bai et al., 2013).
Known Issues:
The relationship between the salinity and absorption coefficients of the CDOM was developed for the East China Sea, which might not suitable for other region.
