From 2nd–5th December 2017, the Ocean Carbon from Space (SatCO2): Joint Science Workshop and Training (II) was held in Hangzhou. This SatCO2 meeting was organized by the State Key Laboratory of Satellite Ocean Environment Dynamics (SOED), as well as the Key Laboratory of Resources and Environment Information System of Zhejiang Province (Zhejiang University), National Marine Environmental Monitoring Center, Asia-Pacific Ocean Research Center (National Sun Yat-Sen University, Taiwan), Key Laboratory of Space Ocean Remote Sensing and Applications (National Satellite Ocean Application Service), and Oceanographic Remote Sensing Commission of China.

During the workshop, Dr. Bai Yan, Deputy Director of SOED, stated that ocean carbon from space is multidisciplinary research. After nearly 10 years of effort, SOED has created SatCO2, a cutting-edge platform that includes marine carbon cycle from space, thematic datasets, data sharing, information visualization analyses, and software operational systems, data centers, training courses, and cross-disciplinary research. The first SatCO2 meeting was successfully held in 2016, with plans to hold such meetings each year and with the hope that many marine researchers will participate in these meeting to enhance mutual cooperation. It is also hoped that more scientists will share ocean remote sensing observations and services through the SatCO2 software and data centers.

The SatCO2 Pro V1.0 Beta version has aroused great interest since the first public debut at the First Satco2 Workshop in 2016. The Beta 2.0 version released during this workshop was greatly enhanced in functionality and stability, though still in the testing phase, and will continue to be updated and adjusted. Researchers can access up-to-date information on software and databases (and provide feedback) at the SOED official website, SOED WeChat, SatCO2 email (satco2@sio.org.cn), and QQ group (419021880), and provide feedback.

Currently, two satellite ground stations of SOED, which are located in Hangzhou and Yuhang separately, can receive data of over 10 polar-orbit and geostationary satellites, and store a large amount of ocean satellite data. With the special equipment fund from the Ministry of Science and Technology,SOED is building a remote sensing cloud data center at Lin'an base. After the completion of Lin'an Data Sharing Center in 2018, it is expected to be able to provide long-term sequence multi-source remote sensing data sharing and online remote sensing data application services. The official version of SatCO2 Professional software will also be released in 2018.
