On July 2nd, SOED Training Workshop of Chemical Oceanography Application was held. The Training Workshop was taught by Professor Chen-Tung Authur Chen from National Sun Yat-Sen University, and attracted scientists and students from Zhejiang University, South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, CAS, zhejiang Ocean University, Zhejiang Gongshang University, among others.

The Training Workshop focuses on chemical oceanography and starts with important global issues such as material circulation (such as water cycle, carbon cycle, and nutrient circulation) in the ocean. The main contents of the training workshop include the introduction to oceanography, pure water, seawater structure, and physical properties, seawater composition and thermodynamic properties, seawater analytical chemistry, isotope chemical oceanography, seawater gas, nutrient salts, carbonate systems, organic matter in seawater and basic productivity, marine interfaces and marine non-living resources, etc. It not only brings a wealth of marine chemistry knowledge to young scientists and technicians, but also introduces cutting-edge topics in the field, as well as improving the research methods of the students.

Dr. Chen is a professor of the National Sun Yat-sen University, a distinguished Ocean-Star Scholar of SOED, and an outstanding oceanographer of ocean carbon cycle. His research fields include nutrients and carbon chemistry in the oceans, ocean acidification, global climate change (including paleoclimate), among others. He has published over 200 papers in SCI journals including Nature and Science. (Website: http://ctchen.ocean.nsysu.edu.tw/index.htm) Since 2016, Dr. Chen has held Chemical Oceanography every year at SOED, and has warmly welcome by scientists nationwide.

SOED is creating a unique marine science and technology platform with distinctive international influence. To showcase the lab, SOED has set up a series of “Ocean-Star Open Courses,” which are open to Ph. D. candidates and young researchers nationwide by inviting internationally renowned scientists to teach. Detailed information is available at the official website of SOED (http://www.soed.org.cn/).
